“Who lives? Who dies? And in what order? Who do we choose?”

That’s the trolley problem, in philosophy. It also exists as a board game and actually, my husband and I were playing it just last night.

The game goes like this: you’re driving the train, and the tracks split in two. On the right: your entire family. On the left: a woman who just invented a vaccine that cures cancer. Who do you choose to kill? Who do you choose to save?

And it keeps going: a serial killer or a group of zombies about to wipe out the entire population of India… etc., etc.

Which brings me to the end of your article, it reminded me of the final round in the Trolley game, where you each draw a grey card. Each one has a twist that you must assign to any character on the tracks. For example:

You decide to save your whole family, but the other player puts this grey card on them: “If they survive, they will carry out a mass shooting at a kindergarten.”

Anyway, I really enjoyed your article, it made me laugh a lot.

Oh you’re jogging so many memories from undergrad! We definitely studied the trolley problem in a philosophy class. I hadn’t thought of it when I wrote this but you’re right - very similar moral conundrum.

Lindsey, I see you as a fierce woman, even non-mom, with intrinsic value. And though I find the actions of some people despicable, I dare not judge them, because I've also done horrible things.

When reflecting on Pride Month, I ask myself what is it and who is included. I see it as a journey of self-acceptance and visibility EVERYONE is welcome, including non-moms. 💜💙💚💛🧡❤🤎🤍🖤

Thank you, Darryl! You’re right - there should not be an order for the lifeboats. Appreciate you being here ❤️
