I think I’m going to have to give Katherine’s book a read, because I struggle with winter! I always enjoy reading your essays Lindsey, they’re smart, but approachable with your sardonic and feisty humor! Your writing is effortlessly conversational regardless of the topic. PS- I also didn’t do the summer/ winter swap and besides the overburdened, sweating coatrack behind my bedroom door, I’m liking it!
Of course, I t’s easy to compliment when its justified. I feel you on the difficulty of writing lately- I took my first week off since I started in Oct (over the fourth) needed a reset. Sometimes we all need a reset!
"Where I try to figure out why I feel useless if I’m not productive" - Whoo boy I feel this! I recently complained to my husband that I didn't have any short-term goals and he rattled off 10 different things back to me on the spot....
I loved Wintering, and you're inspiring me to revisit it. Time moves differently now living somewhere that doesn't have a true change of seasons, and I think I need to develop new rituals of my own. I also enjoyed May's follow-up Enchantment -- perhaps that can be your guide for easing into summer?
When he arrived home from work, my father would always ask me, "What did you do around the house today?" I knew the question would be coming, and it was important to have something like 'weeded the vegetable garden' or 'cleaned up the dog pen' ready to report. I think that was the breeding ground for my need to be productive before relaxing.
As for seasons, I've also struggled with the fact that seasons on Maui are more defined by whale migrations and the flow of visitors than by the weather.

Thank you so much, Chris! I needed to hear those compliments - it’s been more difficult to write lately.
Wintering is worth a read or listen! Definitely 💯

Lindsey, I truly value your honesty. I’ve never met you but I care about you. Keep writing and sharing.
Thank you. That means so much to me ❤️

Seasonal rituals are great anywhere! I’ll look into that enchantment ❤️

I had a similar fatherly report to provide. It breeds anxiety around rest 🤷🏽♀️
I wish I lived on Maui. Maybe someday. I’d love to mark the calendar by whales. What a dream. Do you just wake up knowing you’re lucky every day?
